Brilliant. Couldn’t agree more and I’m equally pissed off with the waves of crud coming my way since I first dipped a toe into the IM space. Unfortunately you seem to have said it more forcefully and succinctly than I could (but that doesn’t mean I’m taking my site down).

That makes perfect sense Paul, and i don’t blame you one bit for doing that under those circumstances. I do the same and often times wish I could find a way to crawl through the my internet connection and light their PC’s on fire when they don’t take me off their lists

Jesse you’re right, I’d never hit spam on something I’ve asked for. What I’ve done is unsubscribe from everything but the trouble is some people/systems don’t really take much notice. Pretty much any e-mail that starts with “Hey Paul..” has ignored my request to unsubscribe. So they carry on sending me crap and I spam it until GMail learns. Hope that makes more sense?

Glad to hear things are going well for ya, if you are going to abandon this blog let us know where we can find you at though.. and, not that I don’t agree with about 99% of what you have said, hitting the spam button on emails that you actually signed up at one point to get is a bit harsh, those stats are tracked and can do real damage to people. If you no longer want to subscribe just click on the unsub link (that should be there)

Very inspiring post Paul. I do still dabble in the MMO niche, but it’s more out of a morbid curiosity than anything else. Also, it’s very unfulfilling knowing that you are just selling people dreams and real, tangible stuff they will actually find useful.

That said, I have found one or two very good products from the MMO stable which show you how to make good money outside of MMO, but dang! it was tough finding the products that were actually useful.

Providing valuable content will never go out of fashion, and in the IM business – as with any other business – there are no shortcuts.

I hope you continue to post though, however infrequently, because I do enjoy reading your grounded views on life.

You know, I am slowly coming to the same realization and want to start building several niche websites outside the mmo market. I’ve got the best proof, too: I’ve had one website in the home decor niche (absolutely nothing to do with Internet Marketing!), and it’s constantly been my biggest earner for the past year, making me between $150 and $250 a month with literally NO work (I update maybe once a month). I guess I know which way I will be heading! Another great post, Paul!

I myself recently realized this to be true as well. If you just stick with the basics… good keywords + good content + links you will make money. If you are too busy “keeping up with the latest” you will never get ahead.
