Even with the best made plans, sometimes your greatest source of visitors can come down to something that is nothing more than pure luck. A random referral, a simple comment passed by e-mail, there are a large number of ways in which the popularity of your website can grow over-night. When you do get some luck though, it’s best to make the most of it.
Take for example my Bird Table Webcam. I created this page for 1 reason only, I like my bird table but being stuck in work all day meant that I didn’t get to see it. I did it for myself. Due to the fact that I linked to it from quite a popular website it did get some visitors, maybe even 15 a day but it was never something that I monitored or worried about. I told some friends about it and they wanted the address so I gave it to them, and then I decided that other people may like it as well so started to submit it to the many webcam directories that are available. Eventually it grew to be quite popular, attracting as many 60-70 visitors a day.
Now here is where the luck comes in, one of these visitors must have viewed it, liked it, and suggested it as a “Webcam of the day” on a very popular national radio program. Thanks to Steve Wrights Radio 2 show, the number of visitors to the webcam went from 60-70 to over 2000 in a matter of minutes. I was lucky, I noticed the spike whilst checking some other statistics, straight away I located the source of the new traffic and started to think about the demographic. That 1 piece of luck generated visitors and customers for the websites that I managed to link to from the webcam and some Adsense income for me. Of course if I hadn’t put some work in first then I might not have got that luck, but the main thing was taking advantage of it. With it only being the webcam of the day for 1 day the traffic did decrease again but even 1 week later it is still recieving more than 3 times the traffic it was before. Sometimes all it takes is 1 link and a bit of luck.
