Begging on the internet, it’s all the rage isn’t it! Unfortunately my life is OK, no debts, no sob story, no need to have somebody else pay my bills for me. In fact the only thing that isn’t great is the house we live in. Sure we “almost” own it and sure it serves its purpose but the problem is it’s not in a nice area. The wife (and I) would really like to make a step up the housing ladder. This is where the problem lies, the next step for us will take about £60,000 (or $120,000 US for my American friends out there) to bridge the gap. That’s quite a good sized wedge, and us being an old fashioned couple are doing things the traditional way i.e. saving…well we were!
Seeing as how begging from strangers seems to be the way forward what the hell, why save and struggle when you can post something online? So this is the deal, I need 40,000 people to donate $3 each in order to move up the housing ladder. This will make us very happy and we’ll be eternally grateful. If that’s not a good enough reason then how about this, if we can afford to move then our house goes on the market as an affordable property for 1st time buyers. So contribute to Operation Buy Paul A New House and help stimulate the stagnant property market, who knows this could be the start of a global financial turn around! Donate and save the world!
ps – I’ll not hold my breath whilst I wait for the donations to flood in.

Hey Paul, Good luck on your endevour to have the internet community buy you a new house. It would be a good cause if it weren’t blantantly self serving.
The 3bucksforbrendan campaign at least has a social conscience. I was skeptical about his “internet begging” at first, but then I checked out his page and found that this guy has been involved in a lot of volunteering in the non-profit world (not to mention being on the Board of Directors for Engineers without Borders). He obviously has his heart in the right place and wants to increase his ability to create social change. By obtaining a MBA at Oxford he can exponentially increase his ability to do this because of the networking possibilities not to mention the instant credibitlity that an Oxford grab gets. That’s the reason they charge $90K in tuition fees, because almost everyone who enters that program is in it to increase their own personal wealth. I think we all know that someone going into Social Entrepreneurship will probably not get the same salary an investment banker would.
Painting your campaign for a new house and Brendan’s campaign with the same brush is somewhat ignorant. You can get a morgage for $120K, if you feel the need. I don’t think banks offer $90,000 loans to people who’s career objectives don’t project high earnings.
Also, what do people get for the $3 they donate to your fund? Do you offer any kind of return on investment beneficial to anyone but yourself?

@Yahoo – Whoo hoo, cheers! 1 down and counting, I’m going to start flicking through the local property magazines now
@me – I know a lot of people who are actually out there now helping people in 3rd world countries. Some of my oldest school friends have made this their life. This is a personal sacrafice that they choose for themselves and it’s something that they choose to dedicate their whole lives to at the cost of having a family and their friends back home. It’s a passion. When they collect money, they collect money for the charity, for the bricks and mortar, to build the wells, to actually look after people more unfortunate than you, me. Now that is self sacrafice, and yes it is not something I could do. I love my family way too much to start of on adventures now. Instead I just give monet as and when I can. I get pissed off when yet another person goes begging for money in the name of saving the planet. Begging for money on the internet to put you through Oxford is not a selfless act in my opinion, he wants the opportunities that an MBA at Oxford brings. If he wanted it that much, there is always the option of working for a few years, saving and then trying Oxford, but that’s a little bit old fashioned for the modern “I want it now” culture? Another thought, if it’s such a great investment why not have the charities he’s involved with pay for Oxford. Charities will often pay for training of their volunteers. Spend a little to gain a lot? Put it this way if it looks like he’s not going to make his total then i’ll put in, seeing as how it’s for a good cause i.e. a charity. In the meantime I wish him nothing but luck, each to their own and we all have our own lives to live.
As for the mortgage, it is a little ignorant of you to assume that I can just go out and get a $120,000 mortgage. I might not need a mortgage, maybe I could afford a new house anyway? Maybe I have a bad credit history? Maybe I really want to go and blow the money on beer and women? Maybe we already have a big mortage on our current house? So many questions, so little answers….

Hahaha, I don’t know what to think, if you are crazy or you are the man
I’m going to promise you something: if you get $999 (333 donations) I’ll give you my $3 to help you to breack the $1000 barrier. I give you my word
PS: are you going to place a counter with the number of donations?

Crazy or the man? Hmmm, I’ve been called plenty of things but never either of them before. Given the choice I think most of my friends would go with gob-shite.
I’d say your $3 is fairly safe, I’ll put a counter up as as soon as it goes over 1!
