I certainly thought about it, here's the thing though. Google still love freshly updated content so if you remove your quality comments from the post the post becomes almost static. It's the same reason why I don't understand why people sometimes lock there old posts, all it takes sometimes if for a fresh comment to push that post all the way back up the rankings :)

I think it's an interesting and most difficult subject. Now you need to be careful of where to draw the line when it comes down to approving comments.

Have you had any thoughts about moving your comments to a new page? Like domain.com/post-url/comments/? Instead of publishing them beneath your content.

OK I'm curious, on what type of website can the webmaster not control the number of links on a page?

I think Google's strategy is somewhat flawed. nofollow was a way to say that even though the link is on my page, I am not necessarily recommending it.
Google is taking away that ability.

BTW: Reducing links idea may not be possible on many types of sites.

Your pages link rank is calculated from all the pages that link to it, so each page has a value, fullstop. You don't lose anything by linking out but this is where linking strategies come in. In an ideal world you want to pass on as much link value between your internal pages as possible and only pass it to domains outside your control where you have to. Internal linking can have a major influence on your pages (not the page you're linking from but your website pages as a whole) overall rank and the more outbound links you have the less value gets passed to your own pages. It's a cyclic affect. Does that make sense? Anyway, so for your questions

1. Nothing. Your page has a value that you are not utilising to help out your other pages. It's worth noting though that even without this change in rules every page has a certain amount of its value returned to Google (I think I remember hearing 18% banded around some time).

2. It depends where those 100 links point to. If they are all pointing at your own pages which themselves have a majority of links that point at other pages within your domain then no problem. That's how link juice is supposed to flow. If however you have 5 internal links and 95 external links then you're chucking away your own hard work. You used to be able to mitigate against this using nofollow but as the post above explains this is no longer the case. So you have 5 followed links in your menu system and 95 nofollowed external links in the comments, this used to be OK but in the new world your internal links are getting passed a lot less.

Hello Paul, I just found your blog and find it very interesting – especially this post because it is news to me.

Based on your description is seems that every webpage has a certain amount of link juice. And you state that you loose all of it regardless if you have 1 out link or 100. For some reason I always thought that you keep some link juice for yourself by having less out links and it benefits you in SEO terms. The more you keep the better your SEO. I have 2 questions:

1)What happens to the link juice if you have no out links?
2)How does it effect you if you have 1 out link or 100? Since you loose all your link juice anyway why do you care if it is broken up into 5% each for 20 out links or 100% to 1 out link. How does your blog suffer by having more out links if all the link juice is drained regardless of the amount of out links?

Thanks. Roman

Jeet, I like that idea as long as you can come up with a good way of describing that page in a link. I suppose Terms & Conditions would cover it?

Jesse, congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your daughter. Plenty of sleepless nights ahead for you! I think the significance of this will only be appreciated a few months down the line when those that have taken action now start to see the benefits. Knowing my luck by the time I've updated my 40 odd websites Google will change the rules again.

Hi Paul,
I recently did a post on this topic as well. It seems there are many that have no idea what this means so it is good to spread the word.

For anyone that doesn't know the implications this has, I strongly suggest reading up on it. It is definitely a game changer for sure.
