I know quite a few of my readers are far more up to date with phone technology than I am (I drop by your blogs from time to time you know!) so I’m putting the shout out. I really want an unlocked iPhone 3GS but can’t find one anywhere online, anybody any ideas?

Unlocking isn’t illegal where I live, in fact the local Telecoms provider source their unlocked iPhone’s from the Czech Republic. The trouble is that they want to charge me an extortionate fee for the phone and then to add to the pleasure a rip-off monthly contract. I don’t need all this, I only want it as a development toy. I’ve been messing around with iPhone apps and now I’d like to think about putting something live. I also need a new phone and I see no point in buying old technology (a standard iPhone 3G). When I’m not in reach of a wireless network I’ll not be using the data side at all. For me it’s just a phone 90% of the time and hooked up to my MacBook the other 10%.

Ideally I’d like to be able to buy it from Apple direct but because we get flagged as the UK they will only sell me an O2 UK locked version (we don’t even have the option of an O2 UK network) so I’m stuck. I suppose I could order the 3GS officially from Apple and then pay to have it unlocked locally but there’s always a risk involved, and to be frank with a phone costing £600+ I don’t really want that risk.

So instead I’d like the option of buying an unlocked iPhone 3GS from a country where the phones are officially sold as unlocked. If anybody knows of a website doing this can you let me know? I’m not scared of splashing the cash on the right phone if somebody can find it (I’m happy to go through an affiliate link for your hard work).
