I have a real post in the offing (honestly) but I want to get this of my chest.
What the hell is it about bloggers that makes them think they know everything about everything? There is definitely a relationship between blogging, making money online and a persons inability to take advice.
Too many bloggers write about a subject as if what they are saying is fact when in reality the most research they have done is spent five minutes Googling. Why I find this so strange is that I love learning, there are some comments I got on this blog from the early days that really did help me shape what I’m doing now. If somebody who obviously (or not) knows more about something than me recommends I try something then you know what, I try it! When I’m in the gym and one of the instructors offers up some knowledge on how I can improve my technique I listen and try it. I certainly don’t argue the toss, it’s a little known fact that when you try and argue a point based on minimal Googling more often than not you simply end up looking a cunt. My life has always been this way, I love meeting people who are so much better than me at what they do and learning from them. Even at a raw performance level, it’s why I’m in awe of some professional athletes, it’s that feeling of no matter what you do never ever being close to their performance, but still being able to learn from them. Wayne Rooney week in week out, watching Jonah Lomu steam roller England, Usain Bolt winning Olympic gold.
I get the feeling that if the average MMO blogger bumped into Usain Bolt he’d spend 20 minutes telling him where he is going wrong with his start. If James Dyson wanted to share some thoughts with me about entrepreneurship would I listen? I would, I could mention more than a few names that wouldn’t. Even in “our” circle when John Chow via Michael Kwan critiqued this blog I took it on board and made some changes. It would have been very easy to take the standard blogger “I’m right you’re wrong” attitude but when somebody who earns as much more than me as John Chow does says what you’re doing is crap, even if you don’t like the guy, you’ve got to respect the opinion.
So here is a tip for all you bloggers out there reading this, if somebody offers you some advice for fucks sake listen to them and at the very least respect that opinion. They MIGHT just know a lot more than you about what is being talked about.
Rant Over.
