As I’ve wrote about in the past I really don’t see why the average webmaster would need to use a VPS or dedicated server. The search for 100% uptime, whilst compulsive is ultimately doomed to failure as you soon realise that your extra money only really guarantees you more resources and root access, not extra uptime. But what if you really want 100% uptime, is there a solution?
I started a new project recently and by its nature it NEEDS as close to 100% uptime as I can possibly get. I decided to look into it further and what I settled on was something called VPS Cloud hosting. As I’m sure you all know VPS is a Virtual Private Server, not the same as having your own box but similar, cloud hosting is using multiple nodes. Essentially if one falls over another one picks up the slack so that if there is a server issue another kicks in, seamlessly. The self healing nature of this type of hosting almost completely eliminates website down time (I’d like to say that it does eliminate it 100% but from my experience you can never say never). It’s a great way of hosting mission critical websites and services.
The company I’m with at the moment is VPS.net, so far they’ve been faultless. A nice and sturdy 3 node setup costs only £39 a month which I think is fine for most people. In fact I’ve been seriously contemplating moving all my websites onto it, there’s just the lazy issue to deal with! Support has been great and it delivers what it promises. As you can probably tell, I like it a lot.
So if you’re in the market for some new hosting and want as close to that magic 100% uptime as I think you can possible get then you may want to check out VPS.net As an added bonus (and as an incentive to at least give it a try), there is a voucher available for November that will give you your first month half price, just use code “50NOV”.

I currently use ServInt and they are great, a touch cheaper than the cloud hosting but they are superb in every sense!
Cloud hosting has some appeal though!
