Everybody and their cat, dog and Budgie is looking for more backlinks for their website(s). Getting that right mix of links is vital for rankings with Bing, Yahoo and especially Google. Where people tend to freak out with gaining backlinks is that for the most part the best links are completely out of our control. The 100% natural backlink gained for its own merits by a friendly webmaster is the ultimate link. In saying that there are 1 or 2 places available online where as long as we put in the a little bit of work we can gain decent quality links all without needing to “ask” for anything (The lack of social interaction between webmasters is something I find funny, 99% of the contact I get from other webmasters is auto spam for a link exchange). Anyway, here is one such place where you can get a good quality backlink for a small amount of work.

Taking Advantage Of The New Abilities Of Search Engines

As much as I hate the MMO niche if there is one advantage in keeping up to date with the latest internet marketing ramblings it is that any new techniques for helping rankings tend to crop up here first. The trick is to then take that knowledge and apply it to the markets you are already working in. One such trick that I’ve been using for the last couple of months is to take advantage of the search engines new found abilities to not only read other document format types but to also follow the links embedded within them. How do I know that these links are being followed? Because more and more I see them cropping up in my Google Webmaster Tools backlink facility. If you see a PDF in that list then it’s because the document has been read correctly and a link followed out by the search engine.

You are probably wondering how you take advantage of this? Document Sharing is something that is set to go more mainstream in 2010. A number of document sharing websites are now available that allow you to upload documents in various formats (PDF, Word etc) for the rest of the world to access and share. The pages this documents are shared from are spidered content. Google in particular is absolutely lapping up these resources and providing very healthy rankings to lots of uploaded documents. The strange thing as well is that they don’t seem to be so harsh with the duplicate content penalty for uploaded documents either. This means that it is fairly easy to upload and rank a document even if it comes from a PLR type source.

What I’m not suggesting here is that you spam the document upload sites with a load of crap. They are moderated and you will get banned. Not only that but if enough people start spamming then the search engines will simply devalue any outbound links from these sites. Everybody loses. The technique is simple, create a Word or PDF document, embed 1 or 2 keyword relevant links in it and submit. For my money these document seem to hold much more value than links from regular article directories. As I’ve said the search engines love these document storage sites at the moment. If you’re into affiliate marketing then another approach is to link out to affiliate offers from your documents instead, they do tend to rank very well.

If you’ve ever written an e-book in the past (as everybody was inclined to do it seems) but have stopped selling it/giving it away then this could be a really good use for it. Upload it to these sites (with you links in place) and get some value from it that way. One I did for my wife’s website has already had over 20,000 views in the last 2 months. Not bad for content that was otherwise sat doing nothing on my PC.

Just to get you started here are a couple of document sharing websites, there are of course many more out there and they’re not that hard to find.
