Check out this video from Google’s own Matt Cutts where he talks about the dangers of over optimizing your website for the search engines. A lot of what Matt says here is just common sense, at least for anybody who has been in this game for more than a couple of years. There were certain things we could do just 2 years ago that would have a positive effect on our rankings where today they would have a negative effect. The key points with SEO in 2009 seem to be “everything in moderation” and “make it natural”.

lol, good ol MC again.. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for him as a person and for the things he usually has to say but if you read around there is quite a large flock of people around who would literally go without sleep for 2 weeks while eating nothing but wet paper towels and sand if he told them that would make their sites rank better

Anything in excess is bad. The same is the case with SEO as well. The only difference is that slowly and gradually, the definition of “excess” is changing, rather I should say that the limit that defines excess is shrinking.
