What Does A $500 JohnChow.Com Review Get You?

July 2nd, 2009 15 Comments

As part of my ongoing process of spending my cash to find out how you can best spend yours I had a review done over at JohnChow.com a little while back. The review was actually part of the Blogging Mastermind course I bought (and liked to some extent) so rather than do what I would normally do in this situation i.e. pay for a review of a product of which I’m an affiliate and hope to get my money back, I just asked in a very roundabout way for a review of this blog. I wanted honesty and got it. My goal was to find out what spending $500 over at JohnChow.com would get you for your blog. Why is this important? Because John makes a lot of money pushing high value affiliate offers for products to improve your blog. If you take him up on his offer and try to use his blog as a springboard then this is what value you get. We all know it wasn’t a great review, but then again if you go back and look at Johns review history you’ll find very little in the way of positive reviews of other blogs. Even so the review post attracted quite a bit of debate and was certainly well commented on. So without further a do here’s the raw stats:-

I’m Now Twitter’fied

April 30th, 2009 3 Comments

I’ve been avoiding Twitter like a Mexican avoids somebody with flu symptoms. It’s not so much an issue with Twitter itself, more the technology involved. I figure unless I can update it frequently and easily enough then what’s the point of using it? If I use my mobile it will cost me a fortune, the various Twitter clients I’ve tried were all bulky for what little functionality they gave. The Twitter website is not that good. So in short I couldn’t be bothered with Twitter.

I did however set up an account for my daughter. It took a little while but now she has become hooked, not only that but every day she seems to gain more followers, many from people all over the world. This has had a really positive effect on her blog (can you see where I’m going with this yet?). Am I really stupid enough to ignore something that could be so beneficial? Nope.

My Plug-In For Improving Search Traffic

April 17th, 2009 6 Comments

It’s now been 2 months since I wrote my first ever WordPress plug-in and I’m finally ready to reveal some results. The reason I’ve waited so long was that I wanted to make sure that any changes that I was seeing were long term and not just day to day fluctuations in search traffic. If you look below you can see a week-by-week traffic chart of the organic search traffic that Google has been sending me since I first implemented the plug-in (including the current part week):-

ConnectContent – The Most Important Post I’ll Make This Year

April 8th, 2009 1 Comments

This is one of those posts where I umm and ahh to myself before writing it. Do I really want to share this with the world? A little while back I didn’t and that’s why this has been sat in my drafts for so long, but I figure what the hell, the internet is a very big place and there are plenty of niches and traffic to go around. What I’m about to tell you about is in my opinion FAR AND AWAY the best link building tool I have ever used – a system that can change your fortunes online – it goes by the name of ConnectContent.

Paul Tries To Write A WordPress Plugin – Hilarity Does Not Ensue

DEVELOPING A WORDPRESS PLUGIN
Anyone stopping by yesterday may have noticed something strange going on with THE MAKE MONEY ONLINE DOT NET. I took it upon myself to delve into the world of WordPress plugin development, it didn’t exactly go as smooth as I’d like. The wrong comments showing under the wrong post, some posts not showing at all, random text appearing (at random). You name it and I screwed it up. Why would I do this to my blog? Simple really, I was too lazy to setup a development environment and this blog makes me less money than any of my others. It became my test bed for the day. The good news is that I eventually got “something” working and it “should” be very good.

Using Your Forum Signature To Gain Traffic

February 5th, 2009 10 Comments

It’s no secret that forums are a great way of gaining some easy back links for your website. Whether you try to sneak a subtle link in to a post or you go for the more standard approach of stuffing your signature with a few links it’s a very easy technique. My question is this, just how effective is it? When I talk about linking being effective I mean in 2 regards, firstly in terms of SEO benefit and secondly in terms of traffic.

Google Slaps The Directories (Again!)

January 27th, 2009 0 Comments

Google isn’t a big fan of link directories, they’ve got a proven history of slapping them all ends up. The trouble for the avid webmaster is that it seems that some directories tend to buck the trend and meet whatever quality guidelines Google sees fit to impose this week. These can be a very easy link. There is also the issue that some of my competitors seem to rank well using nothing other than directory backlinks, that hurts!

Using A Google Penalty To Your Advantage

Google, can’t live with them, most of us wouldn’t survive without them! You’d think with all that’s been written about Google that they are the tough task masters of a private members club that sees junior members whipped and punished for the slightest indiscretion. Are they really that bad though?
