I posted in November about how my Adsense was performing during the recession. Back then I posted that I didn’t think we’d have much to worry about as long as we concentrated on quality over quantity. This is an update on how I’m finding things during the recession.
Here’s a couple of images. The first one shows my Adsense earnings in January of this year. The second one shows my Adsense earnings for July. Both amounts are in pounds sterling (or UK money if you prefer).
As you can see there has been a fairly serious drop in earnings – but there is more to this than meets the eye. If you look at the impressions count you can see that that has dropped as well, in fact almost by the same third that my earnings have. In effect my eCPM has dropped ever so slightly but certainly nothing to worry about. The recession has not killed Adsense. For me the recession hasn’t had a major impact on the earning potential of using Adsense on your web pages at all. When you take the changes in the exchange rates into account there has probably been no difference in the last 6 months.
How can I sit here looking so relaxed when I’ve seen my main income source go from over £1500 a month to barely £500? What has changed a lot is the number of impressions. The fact is that I’ve removed Adsense from a lot of my content in favour of other forms of revenue generation. Top amongst these is using affiliate links. Adsense is certainly a bit part player for me now, sure I still use it in the odd place but in no way does it dominate my pages like it used to and the earnings reflect that. On the other hand why would I, in the places where my Adsense used to be I’m promoting dozens of different affiliate programs and in the 5 days of August so far this is just ONE of them.

Another reason to why your revenue is lower in July than January is simple because of the weather. As people we have a tendency to spend more time in front of our computers when it’s dark and bad weather.
Not rocket science and nothing new, but it’s still something to think about when comparing different months.

@Stefan – I’m sure the season does affect things but my traffic in general is about 20% up from January to July. (ps fate/Google, this isn’t an excuse to take away my traffic)

I am so interesting in your earning from Adsense. That is a big amount if compared with my small bucks each month. How many blogs do you have?

I think you made a wise decision when you switched from adsense to higher paying affiliate products. I would suggest you use some form of pay-per- lead programs also. This way you earn money without selling a product.

Great example of using affiliate marketing over adsense. That reminds I have to make some changes on one of my websites. Keep it up man. I will catch your income soon enough.
