Maybe I Was Wrong About Traffic Kahuna

June 27th, 2008 0 Comments

When I was first notified (via spam) about Traffic Kahuna I was in a bad mood already. I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind for yet another ground breaking service. I had a quick flick through the website and combining that with my impressions of their awful Comment Kahuna software I wasn’t impressed and posted about it. Sometimes I shoot my mouth off and I’m wrong.

Maybe I was Wrong About Traffic Kahuna
Since I wrote that 1 person has stood up to defend them in the comments but much more interestingly several people have contacted me privately to tell me how well they are doing with the Traffic Kahuna system. It is delivering them traffic and results, or in laymen’s terms it’s doing what it says on the tin. No hidden agenda there, if people are contacting my via e-mail then it’s not for the world to see, they just wanted to let me know I was wrong! I respect that. That’s enough to get my curiosity levels up, even enough to give it a go. Trouble is that it’s a closed shop at the moment so I’ll have to wait until I can give it a try and make my own mind up. In the meantime if you’re using Traffic Kahuna I’d love to hear about your experiences with it so far?

It’s A Bit Like This…

June 24th, 2008 4 Comments

So I’ve got a bit of free software that thanks to Microsoft is going to stop being so useful the end of this month (6 days, oh crap!) The problem I’ve got is that there are well over a million users of this free software, that’s quite a lot and far more than I can support at any one time. The plan is to release some new software that makes up for some of the short falls of the old software, the new software is going to be released yesterday to give people time to download and adjust…or not.

What a cracking time for my hosts to start playing silly buggers, so far I’m 2 days without the ability to upload new files. Even with all the announcements I’ve managed to put out over the last 6 weeks there are still going to be a lot of people on the 1st of July who are wondering what’s going on. I would guess that I’m going to get somewhere in the region of 15-20000 e-mails that day unless something changes quickly. To make things even more interesting I’m then away to Vegas for a week or so at the beginning of July. It’s the wife’s birthday and I’ve got to promise to do no work. It’s times like this that I wish I had a normal job, or maybe just somebody else to answer the e-mails!

Operation “Buy Paul A New House”

June 23rd, 2008 5 Comments

Begging on the internet, it’s all the rage isn’t it! Unfortunately my life is OK, no debts, no sob story, no need to have somebody else pay my bills for me. In fact the only thing that isn’t great is the house we live in. Sure we “almost” own it and sure it serves its purpose but the problem is it’s not in a nice area. The wife (and I) would really like to make a step up the housing ladder. This is where the problem lies, the next step for us will take about £60,000 (or $120,000 US for my American friends out there) to bridge the gap. That’s quite a good sized wedge, and us being an old fashioned couple are doing things the traditional way i.e. saving…well we were!

Seeing as how begging from strangers seems to be the way forward what the hell, why save and struggle when you can post something online? So this is the deal, I need 40,000 people to donate $3 each in order to move up the housing ladder. This will make us very happy and we’ll be eternally grateful. If that’s not a good enough reason then how about this, if we can afford to move then our house goes on the market as an affordable property for 1st time buyers. So contribute to Operation Buy Paul A New House and help stimulate the stagnant property market, who knows this could be the start of a global financial turn around! Donate and save the world!

ps – I’ll not hold my breath whilst I wait for the donations to flood in.

Nathan Barley

Way back when most of us were more worried about getting good text content up there was one man who dared to be different. He saw the future of the internet as walking around with a cam posting videos and other stuff, that man was Nathan Barley! They only made 1 series of this in the UK but it still makes me laugh my c*** off, I wonder how many bloggers want to be Nathan Barley when they grow up? (Warning – contains strong language)

Just found out that they’ve now released the whole Nathan Barley series on DVD, you can get it from here:-

Cow vs Chow, Chow vs Cow…Whatever

Which Blog Gives You More Bang For Your Advertising Buck

As any make money blogger will tell you the key to earning the big bucks with your blog is selling direct advertising. Be it text links, banners, stripe-ads or peel aways, the more of these you can sell direct the more money you can make. Revenue sharing doesn’t enter the mind of those that have the traffic to sell direct! So in our niche there is no shortage of blogs on which you can place an advert, I thought I’d try a couple out and see which gave the best value, namely John Cow Dot Com and John Chow Dot Com. One is cheap, the other is about as expensive as you get!

But What To Push?
Previously My Search Funds now My HomePages Friends, put simply the easiest way of making money online I’ve found to date. They pay you to use their search bar (up to $0.05 a search). You’ll probably not get rich but it’s all money in the pot. Even better they’ll pay you 3 levels down for referrals, I reckoned I’d be happy with 25 direct referrals on board. According to their earnings calculator if all my referrals did the same and with 8 searches a day I’d be making over $36000 a year from them! Anyway, it seemed a perfect fit for the “Make Money Online” niche so I went with it.

John Cow Dot Com
What started of as a parody of John Chow has turned into a successful blog in its own account. With over 3,000 RSS subscribers and an Alexa rank of under 90,000 I don’t think they have huge amounts of traffic but more than enough to justify a gamble on an advert. I decided to go with a plain text link at the right hand side of each page. The cost was $25, although I think they’ve now raised it to $30.

John Chow Dot Com
I stopped reading John’s blog for a while, too many guest bloggers. However he seems to be writing more now and I’ve enjoyed many of his posts, both on and off topic. I especially liked his video diary through China. It had nothing to do with making money but was still great blogging. John boasts over 300,000 page impressions a month from over 200,000 unique visitors. With stats like that you know there is going to be a price and with John Chow Dot Com it’s a high one. I spent $250 on a Top Stripe Ad banner rotation. My ad was shown on every page but in rotation with 9 others.

So Where’s The Better Value?
This is the key isn’t it? It’s no good spending $25 on an advert that only gets 2 clicks! In the same way having 200,000 unique visitors a month doesn’t mean that a 1/10 stripe ad can justify $250. This is how my ads got on for the month:-

John Cow – 116 visitors ($0.21 per click)
John Chow – 301 visitors ($0.83 per click)

Obviously I couldn’t track how many of those visitors signed up with My Search Funds but what I can say is that instead of my target of 25 referrals I actually gained over 120 in that period. At a raw pay-per-click level the Cow wins! It gets even more interesting when you start to look at where the visitors are from, I really wanted European/US traffic for my offer. This is how it turned out:-

John Cow – 87% from Europe/America
John Chow – 56% from Europe/America

Again this is clearly in the Cow’s favour. I can guess that a large segment of John Chow’s traffic is from Asia and in particular India and Malaysia. That’s fine if that’s what you are targeting but I wasn’t. Homepages Friends accept people from all over the world but I’ve seen from my stats that some nations are more inclined to try and cheat the system than others, a banned user isn’t going to make me any money! If this is offensive them I’m sorry but it’s just the way I’ve found it to be.

Where Would I Advertise Again?
No doubt about this, if my goal was purely a monetary ROI I’d go with John Cow every time. The lower PPC price would give me a better chance of pulling a profit from my ad spend. The better visitor demographic would also help if you were pushing affiliate deals this way.

On the other hand if I was looking for exposure then the extra eye balls that John Chow delivers probably justifies the extra spend. No doubt there will be plenty of John Chow readers signed up and promoting Homepages Friends now, not that I’ll benefit from that but if I owned the site it would have been a great move. John Chow will charge as high as he can as long as people continue to pay it, nobody can knock him for that.

For promoting My HomePages Friends my winner is John Cow, a bargain at only $25 a month.

(By the way if all my 120 referrals got their butts in gear and managed to get 120 sign ups as well and everybody did an average of 8 internet searches a day I’d make nearly 4 million dollars this year from them! I can’t believe that even more people haven’t got involved with My HomePages Friends!)

Why I Love That Nobody Believes In SEO Anymore

June 17th, 2008 8 Comments

I gave up promoting my SEO services to people around a year ago, basically it became too much of a hard sell and I didn’t need the hassle. Clients always wanted “guaranteed” number 1 spots, or guaranteed traffic, or guaranteed sales. That’s not the way SEO works. It’s because there are no guarantees and because people like Shoemoney have turned the very term SEO into a dirty word that belief in what SEO is is at an all time low. SEO, it’s all a short term con isn’t it? Doesn’t work does it? It’s a bunch of con artists selling smoke? Now that I’m not interested in selling my SEO knowledge but more interested in making money from it myself the more people that believe that the better!

You see, why let the truth get in the way of an a-listers link bait? The more people who believe that Stumble and social networking is all that matters in Web 2.0/3.0 or whatever, that can’t be bothered with the basics of SEO technique the better. I don’t want you competing with me using the techniques I use. Because by doing things right, by actually USING the techniques that are in the SEO Book and published in numerous places online SEO can still be a very effective skill. How effective?

The chart below is from a single new deep page on an existing PR3 home page website. I have done no link building other than creating an internal linking structure that will help the page. The content is optimised to within an inch of it’s life for 2 search phrases that I thought would bring nice amounts of traffic. The page was uploaded on June the 6th.

page views from a single optimised page

Yesterday, June the 16th that single page received over 12,000 page views from over 7,000 unique visitors. Over 95% of that traffic was US/UK based and delivered via Google, Yahoo and MSN. Excellent traffic to turn into income.

That’s why I don’t give a shit that people don’t believe in SEO as a skill, because it allows me to do things like that. Sure I do a lot of reading, it takes a lot of my time keeping up to date and sure there are no guarantees….but to say it doesn’t work, well please just keep on telling people that!

Fathers Day

June 16th, 2008 0 Comments

It was father’s day yesterday and for me that meant a trip across the island to see the old man. It’s something that I don’t do nearly enough, I really should make more of an effort but then again we all live such busy lives these days?

Anyway, my dad is from a generation of people that don’t even pretend to understand computers, the internet or anything else more complicated than a kettle. I always really struggle when he asks (as he always does) “How’s business going?”, to give any answer other than OK. Yesterday though my dad being my dad was able to pick up that everything was not in fact OK, he wanted more detail. The question is, how do we (those of us making a living online) actually explain what the hell we do?

Our conversation went along the lines of me saying how busy I was and him telling me not to worry as I’m obviously making plenty. Busy = money. But that’s not the case is it? In a normal job, you work more hours, you earn more money. You get paid for your time. I think this is what 99% of people expect. In this world it’s not the case, it’s just not like that. For example a large part of why I’m feeling stressed at the moment is down to my hours, I’ve been averaging a 14-18 hour working day for the last couple of months. I’m working like that because even though I’m still making money I’m starting to earn less. Why? I don’t know, general world economy stuff, my traffic is up, my websites are still popular but I’m just seeing less of a return from the traffic. In the great scheme of things the cycle will come around again but I’d rather not wait. My answer is more traffic, more links. You try explaining that to a bloke who literally could not turn a computer on. But it’s not just my dad, my wife, family, friends all really struggle to grasp the concept of what I do to earn a living! It got me thinking about how could I justify my work time in a way people could understand, this is what I came up with:-

2-4 hours – Writing new content. I need new content to keep the visitors to my websites interested and coming back for more. I don’t get paid directly for writing this content.

2-4 hours – Link building. The more people who link to my pages the more visitors I’ll get. I can either swap links or try to find different places I can place a link for free. I don’t get paid directly for building links.

1 hour – Answering e-mails. Lots of people see all websites as businesses, not just a person rambling online. Sometimes they want help, being helpful is a great way of building online relationships that can result in links and traffic. Sometimes e-mails are from advertisers asking about rates. I don’t get paid directly for answering e-mails.

4-10 hours – Writing new software. I can either sell this or give it away for free. Giving away free software is a great way of getting more links and visitors. I don’t get paid directly for writing new software although I make a bit from selling programs once they are finished. This is the bit I enjoy.

You look at that and I should be very poor! None of my work time directly relates to any money. So where does the money come from?

Advertisers – Other companies are prepared to pay to have their products shown/linked to on my websites. They can either pay a fixed rate, where they pay me a fixed amount each month to show the ad. Pay-per-click, where they give me an amount for each click their advert gets. Pay-per-impression, where they give me an amount for every time their ad is shown. Finally there is Pay-per-action. This is perhaps the hardest idea to grasp, essentially it means that when one of my visitors follows an advert that leads to an action (maybe they buy something, or sign up for a newsletter) then I get paid an amount or percentage. None of this money is earned directly from the hours I work.

Software – I do sell a few programs. This is the closest to running a traditional business that I get although I stiil have to spend time getting the people to the software.

Getting Paid For Everyday Stuff – This is where time can be money. Getting paid for the internet searches I do, getting paid to look at other peoples adverts, getting paid to fill in a survey. They can all add a little bit. Online people will pay you for the most mundane things.

So the large bulk of what we do isn’t dependent on the hours we work, it depends on how many visitors we get and what our click-through/conversion rates are on any given day. For everything other than Adsense my rates vary greatly. It’s all part of the game that we accept, the trouble is explaining that to our friends and family when we’re all grumpy from putting in too many hours!
